Learn how all the magic of theater happens. This is the opportunity to experience how all the incredible sets and special effects happen behind the scenes. This special workshop provides students, ages 10 and up, interested in stage design with a unique opportunity to participate in the creation of the set for this year’s performance of, “The Nutcracker” by the Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theater Company.
Students will experience the process of planning, building, and painting the stage set and large props. The class will conclude with the public performance of, “The Nutcracker”, which will allow students to see the integration of their stage design with the dance performance. This class is led by artist and teacher John Nikirk.
John's experience with theater sets and props began in 2013, designing and building sets and practical effects for stage productions at the Finley Theater in Sherman, Texas. John played a pivotal part in creating magical environments for plays such as Frankenstein 1930, Jeckyl and Hyde, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 2023, John began his relationship with Low Key Arts in Hot Springs, writing and producing a short film with the Inception to Projection program, and furthering his cinema arts career in the Ready for Action program. With feature and short films to his credit, John has established a reputation for innovation and originality in on-set visuals. When he is not working on set decorations and props for stage and screen, John works on building and renovation projects in the Hot Springs area.
Tuition for this 7-week class is $50. Stage Design Class is presented in collaboration with the Emerging Arts and is underwritten by a Collaborative Project Support Grant from the Arkansas Arts Council.
