    This Drop-In Glass Fusing Studio happens every Saturday unless Emergent Arts is closed or for special events. While it's not necessary to sign up online, it's encouraged so we can prepare for your visit!

    Participants can choose from several projects:

    -a fused glass pendant

    -a fused glass suncatcher or ornament

    -a fused glass tile

    -a fused glass nightlight

    No experience needed. This drop-in activity is completely self-led with some orientation from a staff person. Glass is pre-cut. Parents/Guardians must decide what is age appropriate for their child, and you will be responsible for guiding your child through the process. Please keep in mind, glass is sharp. 

    Glass pieces are fused in a kiln by Emergent Arts, and is based on our firing schedule. You will be notified when your piece is ready for pick-up, usually within two weeks of your visit.

    Cost varies by project. Tuition is due at the end of your session.

    Taught by Kristin Calderhead. Kristin has taught art k-12 and currently is the Director of Expressive Arts at Birchtree Communities. While she can do it all, your little ones will love painting with Kristin, as that is her specialty!

With Phyllis, kids will do a variety of 2D and 3D projects.

    Artist Wyatt Russel, teaches the 7th-12th graders. He specializes in realistic drawing and wants to pass those skills on to his students. Students in his class will do more than drawing, however, as Wyatt is skilled artist and craftsperson in a variety of techniques and materials!

    Beginning Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom: 101, Learn to Weave a Scarf! 

    Weaving 101, February 24 and March 2, 1pm-5pm. Total class time, 8 hours.

    CLASS DETAILS:

    Join weaver/instructor Yasmin Martin for this fun weaving course! Using an 10” Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom, you will the learn basic techniques needed to weave a scarf! Classroom looms are provided

    In the first class, you will learn how to set up and dress/warp the loom. You will then learn the techniques necessary to weave a scarf you’ll be proud of! By the end of our first class, you will be weaving! You will then practice your weaving at home, between classes. (Yes, homework!) The second class begins with cutting your scarf off the loom and learning finishing techniques, including different fringe finishes. Wet finishing will be demonstrated.

    By the end of this course, you will have basic knowledge of weaving on a rigid heddle loom, from start to finish! And, you’ll take home a scarf you will be proud of! 

    SUPPLIES NEEDED:

    Please bring with you: Scissors, Tape Measure, Blunt Tapestry Needle, Pen and Paper for taking notes.
    2 skeins/balls of all 1 color, or 2 coordinating colors of #4 (worsted/medium weight) wool yarn, approximately 200 yards each. Paton's Worsted Wool Yarn* suggested, or similar yarn
    *Paton’s Worsted Wool Yarn is available in limited colors at Michael's Stores. More colors, including some variegated colors can be found at online retailers. (Hint: Choosing one solid color with one complementary solid or one variegated color can add additional interest to your weaving!)

    Yasmin has been working with fiber for over 30 years, including crochet, embroidery, rug hooking, basketry, bead weaving, tapestry weaving, hand loom weaving, and most recently, spinning. She discovered rigid heddle looms 10 years ago, and fell in love with these small, versatile looms. “They are the perfect balance of simplicity and functionality.”

    Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom: 102

    Introduction to Color and Weave: Houndstooth Plaid Scarf

    March 16 and 23, 1pm-5pm. Total class time, 8 hours.

    PREREQUISITE

    Beginning Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom: 101 (suggested)


    OR

    Previous experience warping and weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom, at least once.

    CLASS DETAILS:

    Join weaver/instructor Yasmin Martin for this fun weaving course and take your weaving to the next level with Color and Weave! Using an 10” Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom, you will learn how to weave a Houndstooth Plaid Scarf using a simple Color and Weave technique that only looks complicated! 

    Classroom looms are provided

    Skills taught in the course:

    How to calculate the amount of yarn needed for your project.
    How to set up and dress/warp the loom for weaving a Houndstooth Plaid, using Color and Weave.
    How to weave with 2 shuttles.
    How to hem stitch on the loom. 

    We will also briefly review the basic techniques necessary to weave a scarf you’ll be proud of! At the end of our first class, you will be weaving! You will then practice your weaving at home, between classes. (Yes, homework!) The second class begins with hem stitching the other end or your scarf, removing it from the loom, knot, braid, or twist the fringe, and prepare your scarf for wet finishing at home. Wet finishing will be demonstrated in class.

    Come join us for Spring Break Camp! Tuesday, March19th  - Friday, March 22th 10:00am - 2:00pm daily Students will participate in a variety of art classes throughout the week.  All materials and snacks will be provided but students should bring a sack lunch each day. Age: 5-14 Tuition - $80.00 per student

    This is the opportunity to experience how all the incredible costumes of live theater are designed and created!  This special workshop provides students, ages 13 and up, interested in costuming with a unique opportunity to participate in the creation of the costumes for this year’s performance of The Nutcracker by the Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theater Company.

    Students will experience the process of designing and creating costumes for a ballet production under the direction of a professional costume designers, William Henshaw and Hannah Mills. The class will conclude with the public performance of The Nutcracker which will allow students to see the integration of costume design and construction efforts with The Nutcracker performance.

    Tuition for this 5 week class is $40. This Costume Design Class is a collaborative effort between Emergent Arts and Hot Springs Children’s Dance Theater, and is underwritten by a Collaborative Project Support Grant from the Arkansas Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
